UPDATE: December 12th, 2009 - The Vet Bill Continues To Escalate
So much has happened since our last update. Suffice it to say, the arrival of sick and/or injured animals to the shelter continues at a never-ending pace. In one recent week alone, the vet bill increased by more than $1,000. Listed below are just a few recipients of the shelter volunteers' loving care: We all know that most shelters wouldn't have treated the types of injuries as the ones listed above. Those animals simply would have been euthanized and they never would have made it to the adoption floor. However, at Grayson, each life is valued and every effort is made to save it. If you would like to support the efforts of these amazing shelter volunteers, please consider making a donation to help them keep doing what they do best. To those of you who have already contributed to this ChipIn - please know that you make such critical life-saving work possible. For that, you have our eternal gratitude.

UPDATE: October 18th, 2009 - More Recent Arrivals That Have Needed Vet Care
In the two short weeks since we began this ChipIn, there have sadly been SOOO many more vet visits needed. To give a brief update as to why the need to keep "paying down the vet bill" is ALWAYS so great, below is a summary of just a FEW of the poor Grayson patients that have recently required medical care. - Milan - a senior Cattle Dog that came in looking like she had only a day or two left. She was taken out to one of the "play fields" and even though she had horribly long toenails, tumors hanging from her belly, and no hair on her backside.....this girl started trotting around and wagging her tail! Milan has now had three tumors removed (one from her ear and two from her abdomen), was spayed, has been medicated for ear issues, is on supplements for skin issues and to assist with growing a healthy coat, and has had some dental work done (they think she lost some teeth due to her poor diet). She's been great about sharing her run with any dog that needed a buddy and she loves to be loved. She is ten or more years old, but she acts like she has years and years left of playing and exploring. http://www.graysonhumane.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=1830184
- Brooks - a Hound/Terrier mix that was owner-surrendered to the shelter with an old foot and leg injury that had been allowed to heal improperly. After several consultations with various vets, it was determined that amputation of his rear left leg was the best option for Brooks to live a happy, healthy life. He's doing wonderful after surgery and he even made a recent appearance at the local nursing home where he displayed all of his good features and showered everyone with affection. http://www.graysonhumane.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=1661921
- Fenton - a Bassett Hound that was picked up by Animal Control after residents complained that he was laying in their yard, but that was probably there as he had been hit by a car. X-rays revealed a broken pelvis that needs 6-8 weeks of cage rest to heal. He has a month's supply of pain medication, but he's already had to go back for a recheck as he seemed to be in so much pain. It's possible he'll need surgery if things don't heal as expected. http://www.graysonhumane.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=1885879
- Otis - a senior cat that was owner-surrendered to the shelter with a VERY bad eye, due to unaddressed problems with glaucoma. The owner simply wanted him to be PTS, but they agreed to let the shelter determine the best course of action for him. After consulting with the vet, he had the eye removed. He's now happily living in foster care, but he's still in need of his own loving furever home! http://www.graysonhumane.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=1898655
- Jada Jaguar - a momma cat whose babies first arrived at the shelter without her. Trapped by one of the shelter volunteers during the wee hours of the morning, Jada was then happily reunited with them. However, she started acting a little strange over the weekend. She didn't seem to be sick but she obviously didn't feel well either. On Monday, when she still appeared to have something wrong with her, she was taken in for emergency vet care. X-rays showed that she had a broken leg, high up near her shoulder. She remained at the vet's office overnight, must now be confined to a small area, and will need follow-up care. http://www.graysonhumane.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=1845533
- Marisa - a tiny orange tabby cat that arrived at the shelter in a trap with a prolapsed rectum. According to the vet, the exposed portion of the colon "went back easily inside the kitten," so for now, they've done a "purse-string suture" to see if Marisa can keep her intestines inside and have a healthy colon in the end. If this course of treatment works, there will be little chance for fecal incontinence. If it doesn't work, surgery will be needed to try and fix the problem. (She hasn't been added to the website yet - sorry!)
- Bonita - a young momma cat that arrived at the shelter with a litter of VERY tiny kittens, had to have an emergency spay for a uterine infection and a retained kitten. She and her remaining babies (two have actually died since their arrival at the shelter) all now seem to be doing much better. http://www.graysonhumane.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=1817012
- Sephra - one of Bonita's little babies, was weak and needed extra vet care (fluids and other meds). Sadly, she passed away on October 6th. One of the shelter volunteers was right there by her side as she faded away, whispering over and over again to her that she was very loved during her too-short life. http://www.graysonhumane.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=1817014
A HUGE thank you to everyone that has already contributed to this critical ChipIn. As we said before - EVERY SINGLE PENNY HELPS. Please don't hesitate to donate "only a dollar," as we'll be MORE than glad to put it to good use to treat the illnesses and injuries that we're faced with on a daily basis. As one of our "long-distance supporters" so eloquently (and kindly) stated, "Grayson is a bright light in the darkness and deserves our help to keep it shining. I hope you can help. Even a few dollars will make a world of difference."

Major Vet Bill: All-Volunteer Run Shelter in Leitchfield, KY Needs Your Help
The all-volunteer run Grayson County Humane Society/SPCA in Leitchfield, KY has consciously chosen to treat any and all injured and/or ill animals that end up in their care - whether they have a broken leg, suffer from mange, are heartworm positive, or whatever else ails them - instead of merely allowing them to linger in pain until someone else can help them and/or to immediately kill them, as many other shelters are faced with doing. Not funded by the state or local government and the recipient of far-too-few-outside funds, such medical treatment is often an expense that comes out of the Grayson volunteers' OWN wallets. On top of that, they do NOT require rescuers or adopters who offer to take in such dear ones to reimburse them for the additional critical medical care they might have received. They do this, not only out of the goodness of their own hearts, but to also provide EVERY chance to EVERY animal that it WILL make it out of the shelter alive - both happy and healthy when they do leave. These volunteers SELDOM ask for help. However, with a never-ending supply of new arrivals that often are in need of some kind of special medical care (above and beyond just vaccines and spays/neuters), as well as helping numerous local people who approach them to help take their pets to the vet and then were never reimbursed, they simply can not seem to get out from under their vet bill which now totals nearly $8,000.Please know that the Grayson volunteers are constantly watching their budget and they DO NOT spend money foolishly. They also hold NUMEROUS fundraisers throughout the year with what little time and energy they have left. The money that they receive from this ChipIn will not only go towards paying off the outstanding vet bill, but will also allow the Grayson volunteers to continue to treat incoming pets that are injured and/or ill. Whatever amount of a donation you can make towards helping them achieve that goal will be GREATLY appreciated. If you need a receipt, please just ask for one. Donations ARE tax deductible, as this group is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. If you'd like additional information about the vet bills that have been accrued, please don't hesitate to ask. The Grayson volunteers have NOTHING to hide and they're happy to provide such details. And for anyone who believes this will be a "stop-gap" short-term solution, please know that many behind-the-scenes long-distance Grayson supporters are banded together to try and create more permanent solutions for this shelter and its too-small group of volunteers. Please join the Yahoo group that's dedicated solely to this wonderful Leitchfield, KY shelter by going to http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/friendsofgraysoncohumanesoc/. We'd truly love to hear your input and to have you be a part of our close-knit, almost-family-like group. Thank you for ANY and ALL of your support!
